Daniel Avchen, FAIA, LEED AP, Vice President at HGA, retires at the end of December 2021 after 49 years. Serving variously as a project designer, Chief Executive Officer, and Arts and Education marketing sector leader, he leaves a legacy that has defined HGA, guiding the firm through a period of extraordinary growth and national recognition. An advocate for design excellence, the arts, and client service, he provided collaborative leadership that inspired colleagues at all levels of their careers. Now, as Dan looks to retirement as a new starting point, he shares his thoughts and gratitude with colleagues and friends—and future design leaders.
What inspired you most while working at HGA?
The people. From the start, I surrounded myself with good people.
What was a particularly memorable moment?
There are so many moments. But one particular moment was when I was honored by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal in 2005 as the CEO who has done the most to help women in business. The colleague who nominated me noted that the architecture industry traditionally was not widely populated by women and I had done much to change that. The award was a complete surprise. I was very flattered.
What were the most important lessons you learned during your career?
Believe what people tell you. Listen to what they have to say, recognize their beliefs, and lead accordingly. When people tell you what they believe, it reflects where they are coming from, who they are, and it is important to acknowledge them.
What advice do you have for someone just entering the architecture profession?
We are here to change the world. We should take it seriously. What we do impacts the way people live, work, and play. This should always be front of mind, because what we do has long-lasting impact. A building lasts a long time. Be aware of the impact of your work. As an architect, you have a huge responsibility.
If not an architect, what would you be?
I did exactly what I wanted to do since the third grade when I first started drawing house plans.
What’s next on your agenda?
Going back to school to learn about things I don’t already know. Stay tuned.
