Virginia Department of Transportation / Virginia State Police

Creating a Collaborative Environment for Virginia's State Service

We provided architectural, engineering and interior design services for the Virginia Department of Transportation / Virginia State Police Joint Safety Operations center, VDOT / VSP JSOC. Located on the campus of the existing VDOT Richmond District Headquarters, the new, 86,500 SF building combines the vocabulary of the existing brick buildings with a contemporary glass and steel structure.

The new facility houses the VDOT Headquarters and the VSP Division 1 Headquarters and the Traffic Operations center, which accommodates both groups in a collaborative environment. The space is designed to inspire collaboration and innovation, as well as pay homage to the achievements of civil engineering and reflect the VDOT culture of service to our fellow citizens.

With three stories it is composed of three major volumes relating to the three occupants. The Virginia State Police Division 1 offices and the VDOT / VSP Traffic Operations Center occupy one story spaces enclosed in a brick envelope punctuated with glazed punched openings similar to the existing one story brick buildings that remain on the site. Placed on a portion of these one story volumes is the two story Virginia Department of Transportation Richmond District office. This element is clad in metal panels and glass with sunscreens on the south, east, and west facades.
