Beloit, Wisconsin
Overview
Kerry is a 260,000-square-foot headquarters consisting of four building components on a 24-acre site. Housing a pilot plant, laboratory building, office building and entry building, the facility serves as the North American headquarters for Kerry Americas.
The LEED-certified Kerry Centre is designed to an Energy Star rating and has received one of the highest Wisconsin Focus on Energy incentives for a single project--$225,000. This "high-performance, sustainable building" resulted in overall energy use 27 percent better than code and 15 percent better than ASHRAE 90.1, 2004.
Key components include a central campus steam and chilled water power plant to serve the building with the most efficient method for heating, cooling and process needs. Also integral to Kerry energy efficiency is a centralized air-handling unit ventilation system that provides higher fan energy efficiency over less centralized smaller systems.
HGA also provided LEED pre-requisite commissioning on this project. In all, HGA commissioned more than 600 pieces of equipment and performed more than 100 functional performance tests. The results: 95 percent of all commissioning issues were corrected prior to occupancy, netting the owner a return on the commissioning investment of 900 percent.

Energy & Infrastructure
The LEED-certified complex meets Energy Star rating and has received one of the highest Wisconsin Focus on Energy incentives for a single project. This high-performance building resulted in overall energy use of 27 percent better than code and 15 percent better than ASHRAE 90.1, 2004. Key components include a central campus steam and chilled water power plant with the most efficient method for heating, cooling and process needs. In addition, a centralized air-handling unit ventilation system provides higher fan-energy efficiency over less centralized smaller systems.
Industrial engineering
To achieve Lean results, HGA conducted an in-depth study of Kerry's operational model and business structure. The project team used a collaborative approach that included scientists, engineers, operations and leadership. By challenging current protocols and encouraging creativity, HGA developed a solution that reduces square footage, promotes communication and collaboration, and provides optimal floor layout to maximize production and minimize risks.
Interior Design
HGA designed interior spaces around an open plan that emphasizes visual connection.
In the entry building, an open staircase connects programming functions along multiple floors. Spacious windows, crisp cherry-wood panels, glass-and-metal finishes and uncluttered furnishings create a bright arrival point. For office spaces, HGA grouped workstations toward the center of each floor near meeting areas. Circulation corridors along the perimeter allow natural daylight into the spaces. Meanwhile, the pilot plant maximizes flexible manufacturing configurations, while the laboratory building emphasizes research efficiency.
lighting design
Interior lighting works with natural lighting to enhance functions.
mechanical engineering
The mechanical system supports the architecture's innovations to enhance energy efficiency. A central campus steam and chilled-water power plant with heat-recovery systems provides efficient heating and cooling. A centralized air-handling ventilation system provides higher fan energy efficiency over less centralized smaller systems. A computerized building-management system monitors energy efficiency.
sustainable design
LEED® Gold certified.
