North Grounds Central Plant

Charlottesville, Virginia

Overview

The University of Virginia has grown beyond its historic Jeffersonian campus. The graduate Business and Law schools are located in the North Grounds, served by an older heating and cooling plant that needs to be replaced. To address the aging infrastructure, HGA conducted a comprehensive energy analysis using hourly data that considered the economic, environmental and social impact of the plant. The analysis concluded that high-efficiency boilers and chillers combined with heat pumps provided the best overall value for the university.

The collaborative team is implementing the plant rebuild utilizing an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process with the owner and contractor to achieve the most cost-effective and energy-efficient solution. The university also will use the A/E team to commission the plant.
