Language Arts and Humanities Building Opens at East Los Angeles College

The new Language Arts and Humanities Building by HGA Architects and Engineers has opened at East Los Angeles College (ELAC) in Monterey Park, California. The 135,000 square-foot, five-story complex consolidates nine departments and provides flexible learning environments for a diverse student body to promote interdisciplinary communication.

"The Language Arts and Humanities Building has energized the campus, bringing a more university-like feel to ELAC," said James Matson, AIA, Principal with HGA. "We designed flexible classrooms to meet a range of teaching needs and technologies for a variety of departments."

Located at the heart of the campus, the Language Arts and Humanities Building emphasizes ELAC's new campus front door and creates a gateway to the central quad. As such, HGA designed a massing and palette strategy that weaves this landmark project into the campus while looking for opportunities to enhance the collegiate character of ELAC. The concepts of engagement, adaptability and smooth
