HGA Awarded 2016 AIA MN Honor Award for Emerson

Emerson renovation by HGA Architects and Engineers has won an AIA Minnesota Honor Award for Architecture at the 2016 Convention & Products Exposition.

The awards jurors praised the project for its clear planning and clean aesthetic.

Emerson manufactures process instrumentation to measure, monitor and control water pressure, temperature, flow and level for the power generation and water/wastewater treatment industries. To attract premier engineering talent, Emerson worked with HGA to renovate its existing two-story, 280,000 square-foot facility in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, into an inviting and efficient 21st-century workplace.

The renovation transformed the exterior to provide natural daylight, enhance thermal performance, and rebrand the building as the home of technological innovation. Concrete block and stucco walls were replaced with an aluminum-and-glass curtain wall and silver aluminum panels, and the lower level was re-clad with an insulated iron-spot brick cavity wall.

Interior planning created an open workplace to encourage collaboration. Service spaces are placed in the heart of the building, followed by a concentric ring of conferencing center, circulation, management offices, and finally open workstations and dining nearest the glass curtain wall. The open plan additionally includes areas for informal meeting, teleworking, and other non-traditional work settings.

The jurors included Julie Eizenberg, FAIA, of Koning Eizenberg Architecture; Sheila Kennedy, FAIA, of MIT; and Patricia Patkau, FAIA, of Patkau Architects.
