2019 Design Workshop Purpose and Description

As part of our Community Action initiative we are hosting our 1st Design Workshop free of charge for non-profit organizations serving the Los Angeles area on November 7 – 8, 2019. This event will provide opportunities for community groups to meet with a team of design professionals, matched to their specific needs, in order to work through solutions to their proposed projects. Teams of HGA professionals will be allocated up to 16 hours leading up to and during the workshop to work on these projects. Our goal is to provide each group with solutions in response to each community group’s proposal as well as recommend concrete next steps for moving forward.

Project Proposal Submission Deadline

Eligible organizations are invited to submit a project proposal aimed at addressing challenges or needs that may be met with the expertise of our employees. The request for proposals was online and open from Thursday, September 12, 2019 and be open through Thursday, October 10, 2019.

Qualification

Eligibility is limited to organizations with documented non-profit [501(c)(3)] status or fiscally sponsored nonprofit organizations that serve the Los Angeles area. Project selection will be based on your project proposal as well as project scope with respect to the resources HGA can commit during the event.

All projects must have prior approval from organization leadership at the time of application submission.

The following are examples of services we may be able to provide. These are examples from previous design charrettes and HGA Design Workshop events. However, we encourage you to think creatively, consider your own specific needs, and describe a process by which we can serve your mission.

  • Imagery and renderings for a fundraising campaign
  • Facility program and planning strategy
  • Facility code and accessibility assessment
  • Marketing brainstorming session and materials
  • Construction project cost estimating
  • Resiliency & sustainability strategy development
  • Site planning & landscape design
  • Technology, finance, or engineering needs
  • Conceptual design for new buildings

Community Action Overview

HGA Community Action began as a grassroots effort led by a few young employees focused on social impact design. They saw how this emerging discipline could help HGA achieve its vision, and at the same time, improve the communities we call home. With a small budget and the enthusiastic support of the firm’s leaders, Community Action was born.
