Overview

HGA delivered analysis, design, and commissioning services for replacement of existing steam capacity serving the VA's one-million-square-foot medical campus.

HGA analyzed the campus steam demands, studied various replacement options, and performed life-cycle cost analysis on seven options, based on various conceptual alternatives to maximize value to the VA within the available project budget. The study also characterized the campus steam loads, recommended  "right-sized" equipment, and identified the value of replacing the existing 1923 plant building, which otherwise required significant repairs and safety upgrades to provide another 40-50 years of service.

Using HGA's report and recommendations, VA Battle Creek was successful in obtaining approval to increase their project budget allocation from $4 million to more than $14 million for a new replacement boiler plant facility. HGA subsequently identified and analyzed potential site locations and developed construction documents for the replacement plant option selected by the VA. Additional detailed plant data was collected and subsequently analyzed to identify opportunities to incorporate enhanced energy conservation measures into the design. This effort reaped a projected 20 percent reduction in energy consumption for the replacement plant and combustion efficiencies up to 88 percent utilizing sustainable energy recovery technology.
