Overview
Cambridge Commons is a mixed-used, market-rate residence hall for students at UW-Milwaukee. Located in a busy urban neighborhood, the U-shaped building forms a protective, grassy courtyard with outdoor dining, recreation and green playing field overlooking the Milwaukee River bluffs. The residence hall includes a series of shared suites and apartment-style units for approximately 700 students, common spaces and lounges, learning spaces, and underground parking. Street-level retail along the front reinforces the urban grid.
sustainable design
With its river-front location, water quality emerged as a major design consideration for Cambridge Commons. Green roofs on the lower levels absorb rain water while the upper roofs redirect rain water into an underground cistern for irrigation. Porous pavements and extensive rain gardens with native plantings clean and filter storm water, preventing it from eroding the bluff. Additionally, floor-by-floor "dashboards" enable residents to monitor their energy usage in real time.
LEED® Gold certified.
