Northrop, Auditorium Renovation

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Overview

HGA transformed the historic Northrop Auditorium into a major arts venue that creates a vibrant arts focus for the campus and Twin Cities' community. Featuring a reconfigured auditorium and updated public spaces, Northrop serves multiple creative and academic functions, fulfilling the University's mission to establish a "crossroads of learning, discovery, arts, and community."

The renovation includes a 2,700-seat auditorium; 168-seat flexible theatre; caf├ę and public gathering spaces; restored historic lobby; updated backstage spaces; academic, seminar, and lecture rooms; and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades.

Northrop includes variable acoustics to support a variety of orchestral and vocal performances, improved sightlines with 80 percent of the seats within 100 feet of the stage, and positive patron experience with additional rest rooms, concession, and full ADA access.

This project reflects a strong commitment to preserving the university's culture and history. It's making something old new and viable again.
