During the planning process there are often competing agendas and leading the planning session can be a challenge for anyone. In our case, the budget was extremely tight and the level of tension between the different groups was unusually high. The HGA group, particularly Mr. Ross, did an outstanding job of sorting through the issues and dealing with them in a constructive fashion. The group was able to make decisions and move forward very quickly, in spite of all the issues. I was particularly impressed with the interface between the HGA group and the consultants, especially the lab planners. To the faculty on our committee, they were a single company and interacted with a common voice, even when dealing with controversial issues.

Overview
As an extension of the Master Plan for the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, a Detailed Project Program (DPP) was developed and updated for phase one, Physical Sciences 1. The design team, HGA/KMW, prepared conceptual design studies of several alternatives for the precinct. The site is opposite the new Science Library and forms a gateway to the Science Precinct. The conceptual design suggests that the massing of the Physical Sciences 1 frame the gateway with similar height to the three story library forming an entry from the northern residential sector of the campus. The program for the building includes chemistry, physical sciences, instrumentation, hybrid and synthetic laboratories, NMR labs, teaching labs, offices, classrooms and a conference center. The building includes both instruction and research facilities.
