Capitol Interior and Exterior Restoration

Saint Paul, Minnesota

Overview

The Minnesota State Capitol, Cass Gilbert’s most acclaimed masterworks, has just undergone it’s most significant restoration/rehabilitation in years. Although limited upgrades and localized building repair campaigns had kept the century-year-old building in service, archaic building systems and aging infrastructure were no longer capable of meeting current expectations for contemporary office space. Planning initiatives to preserve and revitalize the Capitol culminated in a $310 million multiphased construction project that modernized all building systems while simultaneously preserving the historic character of this landmark structure. The design process guiding the restoration/rehabilitation of this treasured landmark was driven by a vision to prepare the “Peoples House” to serve the constituents of Minnesota, with befitting dignity, for another hundred years.
