Overview

For this 25,000-square-foot outpatient Heart Pavilion, HGA considered a number of sustainable design solutions to meet benchmark LEED® standards, including material choices, lighting and infrastructure. Through an agreement with Renewable Energy Choice, Affinity purchases nearly 70 percent of the electricity from renewable energy sources. In addition, the building shell, lighting and HVAC equipment reduce energy costs by 27.6 percent beyond the ASHRAE 90.1-2004 Appendix G Performance Rating Method baseline. A portion of the roof is vegetative to reduce heat-island effect and improve storm-water quality, while the remaining roof is reflective to further reduce the heat-island effect.

Working with Affinity's in-house Kaizen Lean team, HGA introduced a new operational paradigm that enables registration and scheduling to occur in the exam rooms, thus saving space, operational costs and increasing patient satisfaction.

Former patients, family members and caregivers all played a critical role in the pre-design sessions, in which HGA and Affinity solicited input to create an environment that is efficient and right-sized, from the work flow to the hallway circulation patterns, the registration processes, and size of waiting rooms. Ultimately through the Lean design process, the Heart Center emphasizes patient privacy, safety and a sense of control in a healing environment.
