Milwaukee Public Library System’s 21st Century Library strategy, to remain viable today and into the future, includes relocating branches within mixed-use developments. To serve as a practical, educational and neighborhood anchor, HGA worked with the library to design a new 16,000 SF library within an existing historic building located along the heavily populated Mitchell Street. The library is located on the first floor, with apartments above, to maintain the residential aspect of the development.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and constructed in 1919 as the Hills Department Store, HGA’s design incorporates modern library needs while honoring the historic features of the building. Many architectural embellishments, such as the original detailed columns, antique stair railings and mezzanine, have been maintained.
