HGA upgraded the HVAC system in the existing bed tower to reduce energy consumption. The project included demolition of the existing bed tower systems and addition of new variable volume air-handling units. In all, the team replaced eight existing constant volume air-handling units with new VAV air-handling units; reduced six of the eight existing air-handling units outside air intakes from 100 percent to 20 percent; replaced mixing boxes for four of the eight existing air-handling unit systems serving the interior spaces with variable air-volume boxes; and replaced the existing perimeter radiant ceiling panel heating and cooling with heating-only radiant panels. The cooling is now accomplished using variable air volume.
