Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Phase II - Studio Arts

Saint Paul, Minnesota

Overview

The Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center is a multiphase renovation that transforms the existing Music, Theatre and Studio Art buildings into a state-of-the-art visual and performing arts complex anchored by a light-filled, two-story arts commons.

Phase Two renovation of the Studio Art building includes new studios for printmaking, drawing, painting, ceramics, digital photography, design and sculpture, as well as dedicated shop space and a shared studio space for senior arts majors.

The renovation presents a striking architectural presence to the campus, in which the east fa├žade features semi-translucent, glazed terra cotta louvers in a pattern of four colors, with the materiality, texture and pattern paying homage to the clay objects and glazing processes used in the ceramics and sculpture studios.

A new landscaped terrace reaches outward, drawing the community to the building and reinforcing a sense of campus destination.

The renovation of this dark 1960s building into something that's more open and transparent is really beautiful. I like the way the red terracotta plays off the brick and becomes something that's really modern.
