Fine Arts Building Expansion

Sacramento, California

Overview

Built in 1958, American River College's Fine Arts Building needed substantial renovations to support the college's growing music and theater departments. This two-phase renovation/expansion transforms the building into a premier educational facility that establishes a new image for the performing arts on campus and the community.

HGA renovated the theater in the first phase and added music, theater rehearsal and instructional spaces in second phase. Nearly doubling the Fine Arts Building, the expansion is architecturally compatible with the existing building in height, colors and materials. The main entrance is oriented toward the north, where most students arrive on campus from the parking area, public transit, or adjacent neighborhoods. The lobby is a shared gathering space that ties into the interior circulation spine connecting different departments.
