Hennepin County Medical Center, Whittier Clinic

Campus Park

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Transforming a former Brownfield site into a vibrant neighborhood block, HGA Landscape Architecture built upon the pedestrian-oriented character of the neighborhood, surrounding the new Clinic with a collection of public parks and open spaces that draw in passersby. As the only publicly accessible green space along Nicollet Avenue, the renewed site is a meaningful community amenity that contributes to ecological and human health.

The team followed three guiding principles: green design, community connections, and landscape legacy--seen in ecologically sustainable plantings such a prairie sod system rather than seeding process, integration into the neighborhood context, and use of durable materials and hardy vegetation. The result is a landscape filled with the textures, sights and sounds of nature within a busy urban community.
