Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Overview

Since opening more than 150 years in Milwaukee, the Cathedral of St. John has undergone several changes and alterations, at times diminishing its architectural value. But now under HGA's design direction, the restored church is once again a "Jewel of the City"-a center of worship, culture, art and beauty. Focused on restoring the church to its past glory while making it more accessible to the community, HGA worked with the Cathedral's building committee to ensure the restoration met directives of the liturgical documents of the Roman Catholic Church as promulgated by Vatican II.

This is a dramatic transformation of a traditional church form. It includes the successful placing of a contemporary sculpture in traditional worship environment. The illumination of architectural elements and the focal point is very successful... Overall, the arrangement of the new floor plan is very successful, and encourages participants to focus on the celebration of the Mass.
