Visual & Performing Arts Village

Aptos, California

The Arts Village is unabashedly and unpretentiously modern, among the best architecture in that part of the state. The design presents a clear hierarchy of forms. The walkways elegantly tie all the pieces of the village together.

Overview

Guided by a 1997 campus master plan, the 125,000-square-foot Visual & Performing Arts Village raises the visibility of the Cabrillo College's growing theater, music and visual arts programs.

The eight-acre site orients five buildings around courtyards, reinforcing campus community and promoting interdisciplinary interaction among students and faculty. The Village is designed as a kit of parts, in which the variously scaled and configured buildings-Theater Arts, Music, 3-D Art, 2-D Art and the Forum lecture hall-share a common architectural vocabulary and material palette. The buildings form a buffering edge to perimeter traffic and create a calm pedestrian center. Students crossing the campus pass through the Village and become exposed to the energy of the arts.
