Men’s Units

Expanding Men’s Inpatient Services

The Center City campus of Hazelden Betty Ford is nestled among the forest an hour northeast of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The campus has a full range of addiction treatment and mental health programs, including 175 inpatient treatment beds. Many of these inpatient beds date to the mid-1960’s when the campus embarked on a significant expansion. After investing in several updates for the women’s unit it was time to turn to the men’s unit. A component of this project included rethinking the future needs of the inpatient men’s units.

Creating a calming journey while navigating the campus is important; however, the principal design goal of the facility to fully support the journey of recovery. The redesign of the men’s unit included additional privacy in the 3-bed rooms with dividers as well as intimate spaces for self-reflection. The bedrooms flank a central core with a group room and support spaces. There are also counselor offices along the exterior to allow support staff to be on the unit throughout the day. The community and dining rooms naturally foster gathering as a balance to self-reflective spaces, maximizing views to the lake and the surrounding landscape. The finishes throughout the facility are warm, calming, and intended to invoke a sense of home.
