In California, the state Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) must review and approve all healthcare facility design and construction projects located in buildings that will house patients for longer than a 24-hour period. OSHPD project reviews can take between 12 and 24 months when accomplished within a traditional design schedule and approach. Traditionally, the owner and design team submit projects when the construction documents are complete, and then a cycle of comments and revisions go back and forth between OSHPD and the design team.
