Hennepin County Library - Brooklyn Park

Diverse, Growing Community’s Hub for Exploration

The Brooklyn Park Library is designed to meet the evolving library services and community gathering needs of the vibrant suburban location. This Hennepin County library is located prominently near a local community college and future light rail station. This 39,000-SF replacement library is a place to gather and discover. Three themes developed through extensive community outreach to guide design decisions: Geography, World Culture, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).

The themes are supported by library services and collections, which are being developed to foster community engagement and serve populations young and old. A STEAM-focused early literacy environment promotes child/parent interaction. The Teen Area includes a digital media learning lab to explore technology and content creation. An integrated technology system including large-format video conferencing equipment connects patrons with programs and learning partners around the world.

Sustainable Design

The project followed the State of Minnesota Sustainable Building Guidelines (B3). Several sustainable strategies are undergoing feasibility assessments including ground source heat pumps.
